This weekend’s wish list is full of things that I am missing while abroad! Germany is beautiful and we are planning to go to Paris this afternoon, which is going to blow a certain boy on a budget’s mind. Our suitcases are half-packed, our traveling companions are still in bed, and literally every single restaurant, shop, and patisserie around is closed- nothing like an adventure in a foreign country to make you appreciate “home”.
However, as Dorothy said, there’s just no place like home, and while I have no pangs of homesickness yet, there are certainly a few things from Brooklyn that I am missing terribly.
- Breakfast sandwiches. You never realize how badly you miss bacon, egg, and cheeses, when you’re hungover as anything and stumbling through the streets of Saarbruken, Germany. Which, by the way, is completely fruitless on a Sunday because everything is closed.
- Brunch. We have been fortunate to meet some really cool kids here, hailing from Australia to Ukraine to Berlin, and they have promised to take us out for a farewell brunch this morning. While brunch, in my opinion, includes bottomless Bloody Marys, eggs benedict, and pancakes, I have a feeling it will be more like a soft-boiled egg and weak coffee kind of morning. To all my loves who can swing by Egg or Roberta’s for brunch this weekend, please get a mimosa for me. Better yet, send a picture!
- My Blackberry. Add it to the list of things that don’t work internationally when you expect them to. To everybody that has been trying to reach me: I’m so sorry! Email me here at bbonabudget (at) gmail (dot) com, especially if you happen to be traveling abroad and are interested in meeting up!
- Half and half. While the Germans can make an exceptionally good cup of espresso (and I’m literally counting down the minutes until I can get my caffeine fix in lovely Paris), the “kaffe” is definetly lacking. Add a pitcher of lukewarm milk to the mix and you’ve got one of the most unappealing ways to start your morning that you can imagine.
- My cowboy boots. At the last possible second, my treasured red cowboy boots, circa 1972, were left behind to make room for all the presents I’ve been buying. It has been cold, grey, and rainy here, and I wish I had found a way to sneak my boots onto the airplane. I feel they would bring smiles to Germans old and young.
How have you been doing, my loves? I hope you are staying warm and building snowmen. Much love from overseas!
Xo,
B
